| How to rock your first interview!
Remember why you are doing this: to speak up for the world’s children. You don’t need to be any more impressive than the rocking mama that you already are; as Stacy Carkonen (MAU Vashon parade maven and global grassroots organizer with RESULTS) says, “There is no way to fail when one person raises their voice to bring dignity to another.”
• Do your research: Know the reporter, publication/program, interview format and audience.
• Find your key message: Know what you want to say, write down likely questions and your inspiring answers.
• Articulate what YOU are passionate about. State it clearly and directly from your heart.
• Speak in “headlines:” Offer conclusion first, briefly and back it with facts or “proof points.”
• Don’t over answer. Short answers are better than long. Asked about a problem? Talk about a solution. Frame your reply as a positive statement. Avoid jargon and bureaucratese.
• Be prepared to redirect the reporter to your key messages, should she or he begin to get off track.
• Don’t know the answer? Don’t fake it. You can always get back to the reporter with facts you want to be certain they know.
• Don’t overlap the interviewer’s question, begin your answer when the reporter is finished.
• Keep cool. Don’t be provoked.
• Never lie to a reporter, or your mother.
• Have fun! You are part of one wild, exuberant movement to be celebrated!
