GIRLCOTT

A Girlcott is an action that publicly supports businesses whose practises are aligned with your values. It's the opposite of a boycott but similar in that it uses economic strength to create change. Women hold 83% of the purchase power and it's time we use that power to create a healthy planet for the world's children.

You can Girlcott a business or organization for a number of reasons, such as using no child labour or offering a liveable wage, although MAU has concentrated most of its efforts on companies offering fair trade products.

Why Fair Trade?

Fair Trade helps ensure that farmers and artisans throughout the developing world receive a fair price for their products, that communities are healthy and the environment is preserved. You play an important role in promoting Fair Trade. By buying Fair Trade products and demanding that businesses make Fair Trade products available, you can reshape the global economy to one that works for both people and the planet.

There are many ways to extend your girlcotting power to reach a larger audience and make a bigger impact:

  • Organize a Girlcott event and bring the media along
    • Pick a business and then research the company to eke out any major skeletons. DON'T forget to call the company to make sure they want to be girlcotted before you set a date and time for your event.
    • Write a letter to the editor inviting your community to join the Girlcott.
    • Pass out cards (example) to engage all your friends and educate passersby in the importance of girlcotting products and businesses like this.
    • Present the business owner/manager with a certificate. Make signs, show up on stilts, carry balloons, have fun! Design an event that encourages passersby to stop and see what all the fuss is about.
    • Send a press release to your local media outlets inviting their participation.

  • Consider giving Fair Trade gifts
