How to write a handwritten letter

A handwritten letter in your own words continues to be the most effective way to be heard. Letters can be faxed, emailed or sent the old fashioned way. Once you’ve faxed or emailed your letter, drop a copy in the post. Feel free to include supporting articles or a picture of the family! For letter writing tips, see below.

Here are some more tips:

1. Introduce yourself (a constituent, a voter, a mother, etc).

2. Tell them why you are writing and include the name of the relevant parliamentary bill (if applicable). Have a gander at The full list of Public and Private Bills to check if a bill is being put before parliament anytime soon. Keep each letter to one issue.

3. Use examples and statistics to support your position and/or a story of your personal experience.

4. Provide your contact information on both your letter and your envelope to receive a reply and to confirm you are a constituent.

5. Express your appreciation and ask for a reply.

6. Sign your letter.

Follow up with a phone call, a visit or another letter at the appropriate time. Often times you will receive a canned letter in response to your first letter. Send a second letter with a copy of your first letter and you will start getting attention and real responses!

Be persistent and amplify your efforts: Send a copy of your letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine.

Spread the word: Consider holding a letter writing party to get other people involved.
